The histories of Tolpuddle and the neighbouring GlenAyr vineyards are intertwined, and not just through wine production.

Tolpuddle is named after the Tolpuddle martyrs, a group of farm labourers who attempted to form a union and were transported for their trouble.

Their leader George Loveless once lived in a cottage on the StrathAyr property, of which GlenAyr forms part. This cottage is now our office, and next door is the beautiful oast house featured on our label.

The GlenAyr vineyard was planted in 1975, the second to be established in the Coal River Valley. The reliability and quality of the fruit grown at GlenAyr led to the first major commercial planting in the Coal River Valley district in 1988, with fourteen hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines planted at Tolpuddle.
Another six hectares has since been added.
